Penguins Large and Small

High School and Elementary work together.

Penguins were the topic of the day when high school science teacher Tammi Lewis and first grade teacher Medina Gribble decided to collaborate on a joint project between the classes. The idea started last year when the two classes collaborated on a project about spiders. Because of that success, they decided to do another co-lesson this year.

It started with two different goals in mind for each of the classes. Throughout the month the first graders had been studying penguins. On the other hand, the Anatomy class was focused on learning about a new web tool on the readwritethink.org website.

“The first grade students made trading cards about penguins using laptops with photos and information discovered during research with the high school students,” Mrs. Gribble said.

The benefits went beyond learning about penguins using technology. This experience forged relationships between elementary and high school students that did not exist before. It also made learning exciting and meaningful for both age groups.

“[My] students benefited because they truly enjoyed the experience of helping the little ones with their project,” stated Mrs. Lewis.

The collaboration between the two teachers has worked very well and has been enjoyed by not only the students, but the teachers as well. With the project they were able to not only teach their students about a particular topic, but to also show them what every teacher strives to impart, a love of learning
