The Magic of Chemistry

Chesson S. Demonstrates for CJHS

CHS junior Chesson S. knows his chemistry.

He won two invitational academic meet titles against students from much larger schools, the district chemistry championship, and he narrowly missed going to the state academic meet in the event.

Chesson used his knowledge of chemistry to put on a chemistry magic show for some 6th & 7th graders recently at CJHS.

He first turned water into Kool-Aid, then back into water, then created Sprite, milk, & Pepto-Bismol simply by pouring his solution into consecutive flasks.

In other demonstrations he used indicators to show how colors change when pH changes, making a “chemical rainbow” from universal indicator, tap water, hydrochloric acid, and sodium carbonate.

He also demonstrated how students could produce red cabbage indicators to test the pH of common substances around the house.

Using indicators and oxidation chemistry, Chesson shook bottles and turned them from colorless to blue, or from yellow to green to red back to yellow.

And in another oxidation reaction he made a “genie” appear from a bottle of concentrated hydrogen peroxide by adding a bit of potassium iodide.

The students seemed to have lots of fun, and Chesson was a good storyteller. After each demonstration the students received an explanation of the chemistry involved.
