Stop, Drop and Roll

Pre K Learns About Fire Prevention

“If you are on fire, you have to get down and roll like this,” said Cutter, a student in Ms. Russell’s Pre-Kindergarten class. “Then you can get the fire out.”

Ms. Russell’s Pre-K class has been learning about fires and what to do in case of emergency. They welcomed Clarendon’s Volunteer Firefighters in to their room last week as part of Fire Prevention Week. They listened intently as the Firemen explained how they did their job and what equipment they used to put out the fires.

“The firemen use water to put the fires out,” one student said.

“And they have to wear a mask and a tank because they need to breathe fresh air,” another student said.

The students also learned that firefighters have to wear a helmet in case something falls on them.

Ms. Russell has been incorporating fire prevention in the student’s daily activities in the classroom as well.

“In our room, we have a home station and we have been dressing up like firemen and learning about fire trucks,” she said.  “We have also practiced putting out flames with water bottles and have painted pictures of houses on fire.”

Ms. Russell has taught the students how fires can start by drawing pictures on a big poster that hangs in their room.

“We also learned that every family has to have a plan in case of fire,” she said. “They have to know how to look and smell for smoke and that a family meeting place is important. Also, a smoke detector and/or fire alarm is necessary.”
