Texas and Wind Energy
CHS Physics Students Create Working Windmills
Students at Clarendon High School did a study of wind energy across the United States and discovered that the Texas panhandle region is a leader in producing electricity from wind turbines. In fact, Texas leads all other states in total electricity generated from wind by a more than 2-1 margin. Two of the universities that have been leaders in wind power for several decades are WTAMU, where wind studies began in 1970, and Texas Tech University, offers a PhD in wind energy production.
To top the unit off, students built working windmills using large cans, dowel rods, Styrofoam nosecones, craft sticks, and cardboard. Students designed blades & oriented them to create the strongest windmill possible, measured by lifting weights in a bucket.
This year’s winners were Tabatha G and Zaryia S, and right behind them in second place were Clay K and Taylon K.
Students enjoyed the hands-on project and learning about the influence of wind power on our region, including Donley County and Carson County.
