Evidence: Physics students enter the regional egg-drop competition to construct the lightest weight and smallest device to cradle a large uncooked egg and keep it from breaking. CHS students have won the regional contest at the Don Harrington Discovery Center the last two years against students from all classifications of schools from Lubbock to north of Amarillo. Students use their own innovative strategies and collaborate with one another to design, build, & test their devices. They get bonus points from the professional engineers from TAME that inspect and approve their devices if they are resourceful enough to recycle used materials from which to make their device. This problem-solving helps students build engineering skills, plus they have a blast. Engineers use a complex formula (75Bf/(Weight + Length2 + Volume) + Recycling bonus) to determine the winner. Students must accurately calculate volumes and take care to not exceed maximum lengths and make their device light if they hope to succeed.
