Window on a Wider World

Kindergarteners visit the American Quarter Horse Museum

Window on a Wider World was created to offer students of all ages in the Panhandle a broader look into the culture all around them.  The week before spring break, the CISD Kindergarten class was able to take advantage of their offerings.  WOWW works with science, cultural non-profit organizations, the arts, and educational institutions to promote excellence in programs that align with each grade level’s curriculum.  They offer a plethora of educational programs for the students, which give them an opportunity they might not otherwise have.

The Kindergarten class made their first stop at the American Quarter Horse Museum in Amarillo where they were exposed to an in-depth study of the American Quarter Horse.  After seeing a documentary about the Quarter Horse, the students took advantage of a question and answer time before breaking into groups to complete a color sheet about the horses they learned about in the documentary.

From there, the students moved to the Grand Hall where they learned that they have four things in common with a horse.  To top the visit off, the students were able to go into a ‘mop pony stable’ and pick their steed for an old-fashioned horse race to the delight of the parents and teachers.  Before leaving the museum, the students had a great time in the hands-on area in the education gallery where they could see the all the equipment necessary to take care of a horse and were treated with a fun ride on the in-house coin-operated pony.

After a quick picnic lunch in the park, the students went to the Amarillo City Library where they were entertained with a story about St. Patrick and his special day in March.
