The physics classes at Clarendon High School recently competed in a tower building project to see which group could hold the most weight compared to the weight of the tower. Towers were to be composed of only balsa wood and glue and have a mass under 40 grams. Brandon McAfee and Mckaelie Thomas won the contest, building a tower that weighed 1.04 ounces and held 168.5 pounds This tower held up nearly 2600 times its own weight before collapsing. Jerami Johnson and Cody Hill came in second in the contest, holding up 178.5 pounds, but the mass of their tower was 1.26 ounces and held up 2275 times its weight. Gage Nelson and Mikayla Shadle finished third in the contest, and students enjoyed the hands-on experience of construction and tower crushing.
